How to Measure My Mobile Home Door

Step-by-step measurement guide

  1. Remove interior trim:
Carefully pry off the interior casing or trim around the door opening to expose the rough opening.

  2. Measure the rough opening’s width:
Place your measuring tape on the outside edge of the door jamb on the left side and extend it to the outside edge of the jamb on the right side.

  3. Measure the rough opening’s length:
From the top outer edge of the jamb, measure down to the bottom of the threshold (the floor surface of the opening).

  4. Determine door size:
Select the door size that is closest to your measured dimensions, typically rounding up to the nearest even number for width and height, as mobile home doors come in standard two-inch increments. For example, if the rough opening is 33.5 inches by 75.5 inches, order a 34-inch by 76-inch door.

  5. Note the hinge side:
Stand outside the home and check which side the hinges are on to determine if you need a left-handed or right-handed door.

Important considerations

  • DO NOT measure the flange:
A flange is the part of the door frame that overlaps the wood of the jamb to secure the door. Measuring to the edge of this flange will give you a measurement larger than what you need.

  • Wall thickness (Jamb Depth):
Mobile home doors often include the door frame or jamb. Ensure the jamb depth matches the wall thickness of your mobile home, as this can vary by manufacture date and wall construction.

  • Measure twice:
To avoid errors, it is a good practice to measure the rough opening twice before ordering your new door.

How To Measure My Mobile Home Window

Step-by-step measurement guide

  1. Gather Your Tools:
You will need a steel tape measure for accuracy.
  2. Measure Width:
    • Measure the distance between the inside jambs (the side pieces of the window frame).
    • Take this measurement at the top, middle, and bottom of the window opening.
  3. Measure Height:
    • Measure from the header (top) to the sill (bottom) of the rough opening.
    • Take this measurement at the left, middle, and right sides of the opening.
  4. Record Measurements:
    • Use the smallest measurements: from the three width and three height readings for your final dimensions.
    • Always reference the dimensions in the order of Width x Height (e.g., 30″ x 60″).
    • Round your measurement down to the nearest 1/8 inch

Important considerations

  • Measure the Rough Opening, Not the Frame:
Do not measure the exterior of the existing window or its flange, as this will lead to an inaccurate size.

  • Account for Inconsistencies:
Measuring at multiple points helps account for any irregularities or warping in the window frame.

  • Check for Squareness:
Measure diagonally from corner to corner. If the measurements differ by more than 1/4 inch, the opening is out of square and may require shimming during installation.

  • Choose the Right Source:
Buy replacement windows from a company that specializes in mobile homes to ensure you get the correct size and fit.
